Ollama on my server
What it is
Ollama is the on-ramp to local AI: one installer, one command (ollama run llama3), and a model runs on your machine serving an OpenAI-compatible API on localhost. Your existing AI tools point at it by changing one URL.
Why it's on my box
It changed the cost shape of AI for me. Hosted AI is a meter that runs all day; the machine was already bought. For the high-volume, repetitive calls — summarize, extract, classify, draft — the local model does the work at electricity prices. The full reasoning is in the local AI map; the short version is the barbell: local for the bulk, hosted for the frontier.
How it behaves in practice
- The good: model switching is one command, the API "just speaks OpenAI," and nothing leaves the machine — which matters for client documents.
- The honest part: small models are meaningfully worse at long reasoning. Know the boundary or you'll blame the tool.
- The rule I follow: match model size to memory (7–8B wants ~8 GB), and never judge a local model by a task that needed the frontier anyway.
Who should use it
Anyone with a 16 GB machine who uses AI daily. One evening of setup, then the meter flattens for everything repetitive.
